HB Media is a small, fast-growing publishing company with big dreams. Founded in 2004 by two of New Zealand’s most awarded magazine publishers, Martin Bell and Vincent Heeringa, HB Media intends to become one of Australasia’s most significant niche magazine, book and new media publishing firms.
Our mission—‘to make the complex simple’—provides a broad and exciting brief to create products that inform and inspire audiences in any market, on any subject using any medium.

Our people
HB Media’s key strength is the quality of its people. Our policy has been to hire senior, experienced staff to ensure that the company establishes high standards and a strong work ethic, right from the start. Vincent Heeringa, Editorial Director
Vincent won many awards as a journalist with Metro magazine and The Independent Business Weekly and was twice named Editor of the Year and Young Publisher of the Year by the Magazine Publishers’ Association for his role in founding Unlimited magazine. In 2004 he co-founded HB Media.

Martin Bell, Business Director
Martin has spent nearly 20 years in the publishing industry, including senior management roles at IDG Communications where he was general manager from 2002–2004 and publisher of New Zealand PC World magazine. He also founded >>FFWD magazine, and was named Publisher of the Year in 2002 by the Magazine Publishers Association. In 2004 he left IDG to form HB Media with Vincent.

Matt Cooney, Editor, Idealog
Matt worked as a journalist in New Zealand and Japan before launching a web development firm in Dunedin, with clients in New Zealand, the US, the UK and Australia. He later headed the development team at listed e-commerce startup e-Media and then returned to journalism with Computerworld in 2003. Under his editorship Computerworld became the fastest-growing weekly publication in the country. Matt joined HB Media in September 2005 and launched the first issue of Idealog in December.

Adrian Clapperton, Art Director
Adrian has over 13 years of publishing design experience and was previously art director at AGM publishing, responsible for the design and development for the first seven years of the now-well established Urbis magazine. He has also won several MPA Designer of the Year awards for Prodesign and Architecture NZ magazines. Adrian joined HB Media in May 2006.

Ben Gibb, Sales Director
Ben has had a successful career selling advertising in New Zealand and in Britain. He played a central role in founding Internet magazine and was advertising manager for Unlimited magazine before being named general manager in 2004. In September 2005 he joined HB Media.

Annabel McAleer, Editor, Good
With ten years' editorial experience with technology, business, music, fashion and even legal magazines under her belt, Annabel McAleer is relieved to unite her love of magazines with her belief that 21st-century life should be about living smarter, with less impact on the planet and its people. Annabel has been involved with Good magazine since its beginning in February 2008, first as deputy editor and now editor.

Cassie Doherty, Deputy Editor, Idealog
Cassie has been in the magazine industry since 2000, working on a range of titles in various roles including a four-year stint as deputy editor of PC World. Previously editor of our travel magazine Inspire, Cassie is now deputy editor of Idealog and has been with HB Media since 2008.

Sarah Heeringa, Deputy Editor, Good
Sarah has been a freelance journalist and editor for 10 years. In 2004 she edited Parenting magazine and joined HB Media in 2005. She was the editor of our travel magazine Inspire when it launched in 2007 and in late 2008 became deputy editor of Good magazine.

Cherie Anslow, Marketing Manager
Cherie joined HB Media in June 2009 after graduating from Victoria University with a BCA in Marketing. While at HB she has been promoting our magazines, surveying our readers and putting together the New Zealand Marketing Awards and The Good Shopping Handbook.

Su Yin Khoo, Designer
Su Yin graduated with a degree in graphic design from AUT in 2004 and was soon appointed art director on PC World. She joined HB Media in November 2006.

Mike Bradstock, AUT Media Book Consultant
Mike has a long and successful career in book publishing including Director of Canterbury University Press for ten years and has written and edited numerous books. Mike heads up the AUT Media book publishing project.
